Home renovation shows tend to showcase all kinds of builds for all kinds of people. We’ve seen builds to suit the needs of a diverse background of people. However, a renovation for chickens, that’s a first. So, when a client requests a designer chicken coop, it can be uncharted territory. However, that’s exactly what Randy Spracklin and the team were hired to do. Never being ones to shy away from a challenge, they tackled this designer chicken coop with the same determination they would any build.

No Cluckin’ Around

When building any kind of utility or agriculture building the priority will always be function. If the building isn’t good at its purpose, then everything else ceases to matter. So, for the Rock Solid Builds team, they needed to make a space that allowed the chickens to stay safe from predators, shelter them from the East Coast weather, and allow the clients easy access to them. Once the team had accomplished all of those things, then they could focus on the aesthetics. Sticking with traditional Newfoundland designs, they painted the exterior in bold and bright colours as if it were one of the many fishing huts from the area.

Just because the aesthetics weren’t first on the list of priorities doesn’t mean they weren’t still important. Once the primary build was complete, Randy and the team were determined to make this more than just a functioning space. Like every part of your home, this coop was meant to be enjoyed. So, with some striking wallpaper and some bespoke woodworking, they made sure that this coop would be one to remember. Plus, we hear it’s where all the chicks hang out.

Most deadlines are dictated by logistics, things like supplies and weather. For Graham and Ruth, their deadline was the local blueberry festival. It may sound trivial, but in small towns events such as that are what create bonds in the community. It made sense that they would want to be in their own home during such a special time. That’s where Randy Spracklin and his team came in. The home was a new build but needed to have all the feeling of a true East Coast home, a traditional coastal retreat with all the modern comforts.

Ground Up

It’s not often that the Rock Solid team gets to work on a new build. Normally, they’re trying to overcome age-related issues in a home, so this Brigus home in Harbour Pond was a treat for them. Though the house was easier to work on, it also meant that it was a blank slate. This left a challenge for the designers, who had the task of creating that timeless and traditional East Coast charm in a modern construction.

Controlled Comfort

Once the house was built, it was a matter of making it feel like a home for Graham and Ruth. By adding old school charm throughout, as well as some of their own personal vintage pieces, the house began to feel like it had been there all along. Paired with cool, relaxing palettes, the space seamlessly blended form and function. Now Ruth and Graham are settled into their forever home, just in time for the Brigus Blueberry Festival.

When we think of design and renovations our minds often go straight to residential homes. It’s easy to see why, they’re what we see the most. However, there’s a lot more to restore than just that. Randy Spracklin and his team are back for another season of Rock Solid Builds and it’s anything but typical. From chicken coops in the sky to homes built from a ship’s mast, nothing is too strange or challenging for this crew. That’s why, when a school in St. John’s needed to transform a derelict yard into a one-of-a-kind outdoor classroom, they called Randy and his team.

Rough and Rugged

For most spaces there is a clear divide between the indoor and the outdoor. Normally they have varying and distinct purposes. That wouldn’t be the case for this future outdoor classroom. The space would become a versatile area for children to learn and study in a peaceful environment. Before any of that could take place, the yard was in desperate need of an overhaul. So, the Newfound Builders with the help of a few local volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

Outdoor Overhaul

After repairing the area for new sod and landscaping, the space was ready for a muralist to come in to create a massive piece, celebrating inclusivity. From there the team, including the designers, installed various forms of seating as outdoor workstations. The end result was a place where students ages K through 9 could escape and feel safe during their studies. Thanks to the Rock Solid Builds team this build will stand the test of time for countless students to come.

This was exactly the case at the Dory House. Randy Spracklin and the Rock Solid team were called into create a stunning gazebo for Tommy and Nancy. Already Good

The Dory house was a beautiful home and property before Randy and the team ever arrived. Whenever constructing something new it’s easy to make a mess while building. Often, we forget about the people that live in these spaces during a renovation. That wasn’t the case for the team, they were dead set on maintaining the beauty even during the build. So, taking extra care to not burden the homeowners, the team started delicately adding on to this already gorgeous property.

Getting Great

Whenever designing an outdoor space it’s a balancing act. On one hand, you want the structure to wow, on the other you don’t want it to take away from the nature you’re trying to highlight. Randy and the team kept this in mind, creating a space that felt both luxurious but also comfortable. Now Tommy, Nancy, and their family can enjoy their property and the nature around it to the fullest in this stunning gazebo.

Youthful Design

When making a luxe home, the level of design needs to continue through all the rooms while still suiting the room’s purpose. However, since this was a family with three young boys, she needed to create designs that would appeal to them. This was easier said than done, as she didn’t want something that they would soon grow and mature out of. So, to do this and have a sense of cohesion between the three rooms, she used repeating themes. Funky patterned wallpaper allowed each boy to showcase their personality while giving them an easy way to change their aesthetics in the future.

Common spaces in the home were far less personalized. Instead, they were meant to wow and create a sense of luxury while still being functional. Nowhere was this better showcased than the kitchen. Crisp white high-end materials throughout created the perfect backdrop for stunning feature materials. This contrast allowed the brass rangehood and stunning backsplash to be center stage. The Ravine House is finally finished, after an 8-year-build, and ready to wow.

Single mom Becky was starting to think about her future. Years ago, she and her two sons upgraded their waterfront home for a bigger house but kept the second property as a vacation home. With her two boys getting older, however, Becky was looking to create an income opportunity for herself. Unfortunately, she wasn’t able to keep up with all of the needed repairs.

So, Becky called in Scott McGillivray, designer Debra Salmoni, and the Scott’s Vacation House Rules team. See how they converted this former family home into a Riverside Retreat with a cabana, fishing amenities and a fire pit.

A Former Family Home

Years ago, this kitchen would have been considered a great family space. Today though, the dark finishes and wood paneling suck up light and bring the room down. Much like the rest of the house, it required a serious update, along with some finishing touches to appeal to vacationers looking for a cozy but amenity-filled rental spot.

White, Bright and Full of Light

New floors, fresh paint, and updated appliances go a long way in this new kitchen, which makes use of the existing layout. Now, the space feels open and flows to and from the rest of the house, creating an airy feel. Renters will appreciate the open concept, which allows guests to cook and mingle. Add in a couple of chairs at the island and a subtle backsplash to fit the Riverside theme, and this is definitely a retreat-like kitchen.

A Warm Welcome

At the front of the house, Scott and Debra transformed what Becky and her sons referred to as “the warm room” into a warm welcome. They added a small seating area for guests to hang out in and an office space for those who need to work a little during their vacay. Off to the side they also created a mud room with a pulldown bed where a bedroom once stood. Then, they replaced the previous French door with modern sliding barn doors instead.

A Cool Place to Dine

Meanwhile, the back of the house featured this space, which the family referred to as “the cold room.” Why? Because it was so cold it actually cooled down the rest of the house. Not long after, Scott and Debra got their hands on the space and fixed some of the home’s structural issues. Now this room is a much-needed dining space with plenty of seating where renters can enjoy a good meal together and take in the views from multiple windows.

A True Fishing Retreat

Having updated and upgraded amenities inside a rental is essential, but so is a great outdoor space. Now, this fishing retreat features both, thanks to the new backyard. It’s got a beautiful firepit area for grilling up whatever catch of the day renters bring home, along with a cabana to serve refreshments after a quick dip in the river. Add in a great outdoor living area for relaxing and dining al fresco, and this is a rental that Becky should be able to utilize for a second income for years to come.

Big risks can often yield big reward, but they’re still big risks and that brings with it a lot of complication. Three people who had become very familiar with those complications were Rachel, Natasha, and Walter, co-owners of a Lake Muskoka Resort that was not living up to its potential. Show What You Got

Despite having a lakefront property, with 9 units and 28 bedrooms, occupancy was way down. The main issue was that the resort did not showcase its strengths and amenities. The previous owner had erected a wall to separate canoe and kayak storage. This cut off much of the shoreline and hid the actual amenities from guests. The wall was the first thing to go when Bryan’s trusty tools came out.

Arrive Strong

Guest experience starts the moment they arrive at a business. That is why it’s so crucial that when they first pull into a business, that it reflects the rest of the property. Unfortunately, this part of the property was lacking. With a nondescript façade, run down utility trailer, and exposed dumpsters, it didn’t reflect the quality of the rest of the property. To remedy this, Bryan overhauled the resort’s utility trailer, giving it an elevated look as well as giving staff a more functional workspace.

Sharing the Fun

Once the wall blocking the resort’s water amenities was exposed, the trio got to work making a stunning storage and display for them. As great as having your own amenities is, it’s not cost effective to offer every activity your guests may want to do. It was for this reason that Bryan encouraged them to reach out to other businesses on the Lake. Establishing relationships allows them to offer the most complete experience and helps establish community on the lake. Now, The Chalets on Lake Muskoka is open for business and ready for any and all fun.

So they called the Scott’s Vacation House Rules’ team for help. Read on to see how  Scott McGillivray and Debra Salmoni shored up this beachside cottage with plenty of open space and crafty corners.

Tiny Rooms With No Space

When Scott arrived at the Sandy Pines cottage, there wasn’t much room to move around. The rooms were too small and situated in awkward corners, which didn’t leave the family with much room to hang out together. That was especially true in the tiny kitchen, which was minimized by the equally tiny bedroom beside it.

A New and Improved Space

Scott is a fan of the “heads in beds” model for cottages, but in this rare case, he felt the layout would benefit from one less bedroom and more communal space. So he knocked out a main floor bedroom and expanded the kitchen. The result is a beautiful area where the whole family can hang out. Now there’s plenty of seating thanks to the new island, design appeal via the dark blue and white finishes, and modern appliances to encourage easy cottage living. Meanwhile, lots of lighting options keep the space feeling bright and open.

A few plants, candles, and framed photographs complete the cozy family nook.

Now, this is a cottage where the whole family can hang out, but as the kids grow older in the years to come, it’s also perfectly set up to generate extra income.

Running a roadside farmers’ market in the country is a dream many of us indulge in. The idea of a quiet life on a country road, being a staple in your community, and enjoying nature is an appealing one. It’s so appealing that it’s exactly what Samantha and Paul did in small hamlet of Thomasburg, Ontario. The two moved there to start Our Neighbours’ Farm & Homestead, a local roadside market on their 42-acre garlic farm. As lovely as all that sounds, it was a lot of work for that couple. That’s why they called in Bryan Baeumler, to help them elevate their open-air farmers’ market.

Establishing Essentials

When Bryan first arrived at the farm, some of the most crucial work had already been done. Farmer Sammy had been earning her name, working on the garlic farm, managing the animals, and connecting with other farmers and growers to sell at their stand. Her stand had already been built, a great start, but there was still a lot to do. The property was beautiful, but they needed to create spaces conducive to customers so they could properly enjoy it.

Nature Business

One of the biggest draws to a farmers’ market is, well, the farm. As much as the fresh produce draws in people, so does the scenery. That’s why it was so important to Bryan that they also add an open-air farmers’ market to the stand. Not only does it add to the aesthetic, but now all the bases are covered. In inclement weather guests can simply shop inside the stand, but on those nicer days they can shop for their supplies out in that fresh country air.

A Fresh Look

Not only is making a business look its best important to the customers, but it’s also important to its owners. This is especially true when those owners live at their business. Creating a space that you’re both proud of and enjoy being at is crucial. While Bryan was away, Paul and Sammy got to work creating a home and business that checked all of these boxes. Now, Our Neighbour’s Farm & Homestead is open for business.
