Solo travel is officially out for 2025! According to recent data from Flight Centre Travel Group, instead, Canadians are now looking to connect with others during their travels. The travel agency has noted that bookings for solo trips have decreased by six per cent over the past year, while bookings for family and couples’ trips have increased by six per cent and 10 per cent. This craving for connection aligns with a recent YouGov survey, which reported that 48 per cent of Canadians value deeper personal connections while travelling abroad.

The shift in Canadian’s travel behavior isn’t too surprising, as solo travel and independent trips were popular in 2024 and it’s only natural for humans to seek connection. It seems that Canadians, during a time of high inflation and uncertainty in the world, are favouring what truly matters in life — their relationships with loved ones.

If sharing experiences with loved ones is on your bucket list for 2025, we’ve uncovered the top destinations that offer entertainment and flexibility for all ages. Whether you’re travelling with kids, grandparents, a friend or a romantic partner, these are the five best places to connect in 2025:

The Ludlow Hotel in New York City
Ludlow Hotel

New York City

When it comes to travel that aligns with connection, New York City is an obvious choice, given how populated the city is and the number of attractions it offers. Whether you’re visiting Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, a renowned museum or catching a show on Broadway, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in NYC. Plus, NYC has some of the best accommodations in the world. For those wanting to check out a trendy part of the city, we suggest staying at The Ludlow Hotel in the Lower East Side. The decor is cozy, the staff are incredibly friendly and best of all, you can walk to countless bars, music venues and restaurants. There’s even a restaurant on-site, Dirty French, offering bistro-style dishes like chicken and crepes and tuna tartare (be sure to ask for the bread basket – it’s one of the best in the city!)

The lobby at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn
Ace Hotel Brooklyn

If NYC is a little too busy for your liking, we suggest staying just outside the city in Brooklyn. There, you’ll find another great place to stay – The Ace Hotel Brooklyn. Opened in 2021, the design-forward hotel boasts a breathtaking lobby featuring loads of natural light, inspiring artwork and unique vintage furniture. There’s also a number of food and beverage options on-site, allowing guests to fully take in the art and people-watch at the same time. Rooms at the Ace Brooklyn are thoughtfully-designed with the hotel’s signature aesthetic in mind – think: lots of exposed concrete, oversized windows, plywood furniture and deep green accents.

Vietnam

For those looking for a more affordable option in 2025, Vietnam is a great culturally-rich choice. It’s also a good option for those who want to experience connection abroad but are planning to travel solo, as countless group tours are available here. Tour operators like G Adventures and Intrepid Travel are two companies that make it easy to meet others while abroad, offering everything from wellness tours to local living tours. They even have tours designed exclusively for those travelling alone who crave connection – dubbed ‘Solo-ish Adventures,’ the itineraries on these tours are packed with experiences that turn strangers into a close-knit community. For younger travellers (hello, Gen Z!), there’s also Topdeck Travel, a company that specializes in vibrant, social tours for solo adventurers. They offer 330 different tours in 65 countries so the options are truly plentiful.

France

While Paris may be synonymous with romance, it’s also an ideal choice for friends looking to explore a new city together. Endless fine dining options, charming cobblestone streets, one-of-a-kind shops and a lively night scene make it the perfect destination for friends travelling together. For those looking for something a little quieter, Club Med Opio en Provence is a great place to experience the French countryside. Situated along the French Riviera, this upscale all-inclusive resort offers guests exclusive amenities like golfing, a luxurious spa, an oversized outdoor pool and various cooking classes. There’s even a circus school for those seeking a little more adventure during their stay.

New Zealand

If distance isn’t an obstacle, New Zealand is a great choice for travel in 2025. Known for its stunning landscapes, New Zealand caters to adventurous solo travellers looking to join group hiking tours and guided road trips. It’s the perfect destination for making new connections while exploring breathtaking fjords and rugged terrain.

Plus, New Zealand hits another travel trend that we’ve predicted to be big in 2025 – JOMO travel. JOMO is all about the “joy of missing out,” meaning travellers are aiming to escape the fast pace of everyday life by doing less on vacation. So, whether that means staying in a secluded cabin in the New Zealand wilderness or a country estate in the French countryside, travellers will be able to rest and recharge by following this trend.

Florida

Florida is a great option for those travelling with younger children and teenagers alike. In terms of popular attractions, there’s Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, the latter of which is set to open their latest buzz-worthy experience in 2025, Epic Universe. Thanks to such attractions that skew towards a younger demographic, Florida boasts countless hotels and resorts geared towards multi-generational families and larger groups in general. Two such hotels that are currently trending online are the Legoland Florida Resort in Cypress Gardens and the guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood. Both are incredibly unique and fun in their own right and worth checking out if you happen to be in the area.

For those travelling with friends or a significant other, Miami is always a good option, too. In addition to design-worthy hotels, there’s lots to do – think beautiful beaches, art deco museums, luxurious spas, fine dining and a variety of festivals happening at any given time.

Have you heard about the Home Depot Christmas tree that’s gone viral? If not, you might just be living under a rock (or just really good at avoiding social media!). In the past few days, TikTok has been ablaze with videos of users setting up their beloved Grand Duchess Balsam Fir Christmas trees from Home Depot. So much so that the hashtag #viralchristmastree has garnered more than 70 million views on the popular social media app. So what’s all the fuss about?

Home Depot

Why This Home Depot Tree Is So Popular

According to TikTok fans, this 7.5 foot artificial Christmas tree is unique because it’s pre-lit with more than 2,000 colour-changing LED lights that are controlled by a remote control. It also features over 3,000 branch tips, which give it a thick foliage look, and memory wire branch tips so it maintains its shape after coming out of storage. According to The Home Depot Canada’s Decorative Holiday Merchant, Konstance Sevastos, the tree is “easy to set up and control and brings festive cheer to your home with either warm white or colourful lights.” The result is pretty spectacular if you’re into bold and bright Christmas decor.

Potential Cons of the Viral Tree

However, if 2,000 shiny lights seems like a bit much in terms of LEDs in your living room, you’re not alone. Last year, some buyers noted that the lights were too bright and giving them a headache. While this year’s new and improved Grand Duchess tree comes with a dimmer featuring 11 light functions, 2,000 LEDs may still be too much for some. The price is also somewhat steep as this tree will set you back a whopping $498. While the tree is currently in stock online and in-stores, if last year’s sold-out status is any indication, this year’s Grand Duchess tree is sure to fly off shelves, too.

If you’re still on the fence about an artificial Christmas tree with so many lights, perhaps these more subtle (and cheaper!) alternatives are a better fit…

A Stylish Pink Christmas Tree

If you’re a fan of the colour pink and still want to make a statement this holiday season, this ombre pink and white Christmas tree will do just the trick. Though it doesn’t contain as many lights as the viral Grand Duchess tree (500 lights compared to 2,250), it does measure 7.5 feet tall so it’s still sure to make a big impact. Plus, it’s less than half the price of the viral Home Depot tree which we can all agree on is a very good thing.

While we can’t have a designer visit you personally, we can fill you in on the items designers would ditch immediately if they were to enter your personal space. So, without further ado, here are the things four interior designers across Canada do not want to see in our homes in 2024. That’s right, if you’ve got any of these decor items in your home, it’s time to consider donating them… pronto! Happy purging, everyone.

Montana Labelle

1. New Leather Sofas and Recliners

“In the ever-evolving world of interior design, trends come and go, and one trend that is rapidly fading into obscurity is the era of lumpy leather sofas and Laz-y Boy Recliners. Once regarded as a symbol of luxury and sophistication, these outdated pieces are being replaced by more comfortable, stylish and functional alternatives. The primary downfall of lumpy leather sofas is their lack of comfort. Over time, leather can develop unsightly lumps and creases that compromise the seating experience. Modern consumers prioritize comfort in their living spaces, seeking sofas that provide plush support without sacrificing aesthetics. Innovative materials and designs now offer a superior level of comfort that lumpy leather sofas simply cannot match.”

“Interior design trends are shifting towards cleaner lines, sleek profiles and minimalist aesthetics. Lumpy leather sofas, with their bulky and often outdated designs, clash with the contemporary desire for streamlined furniture. Today’s consumers prefer sofas that exude sophistication through simplicity, opting for smooth textures and refined silhouettes over the cumbersome appearance of lumpy leather. Finally, as awareness of environmental and ethical issues grow, consumers are increasingly turning away from traditional leather upholstery. The leather industry is associated with environmental degradation and animal welfare concerns. Many individuals now prioritize eco-friendly and cruelty-free furniture options, favoring sofas made from recycled materials or plant-based fabrics over lumpy leather sofas that contribute to unsustainable practices.”

2. Mass-Produced Home Decor

“While incorporating current trends can help a home feel relevant and current, we tend to steer clear of overemphasizing passing fads to keep your space feeling timeless and chic. One item, or in this case, items we’d like to see banished are mass-produced decor that lacks character. Being mindful while purchasing, selecting items from local makers, treasures found on your travels or commissioning a meaningful piece of art, helps to tell a story about who you are in your home. Where you invest your dollars reflects your values and therefore should be a thoughtful process of selection. Not only does this approach support local artisans and potentially underrepresented makers, but it also brings a ton of personality into your home that you often can’t find in a one-stop shop.”

Sha Wang, an interior designer from Vancouver, BC

3. Heavy, Dark Furniture

“I often advise against incorporating dark, heavy furniture into a room due to its significant impact on both the ambiance and practicality of the space. Dark furnishings tend to absorb light rathe than reflect it, resulting in a smaller, darker, and less welcoming atmosphere, especially in areas lacking natural light. Additionally, bulky furniture pieces can visually overwhelm a room, making it feel cramped and stifling, especially in compact spaces. Instead, I suggest opting for lighter-coloured furniture with sleeker designs to promote a sense of openness and airiness. Lighter furniture not only brightens up a room but also facilitates easier rearrangement and a more adaptable layout. By selecting lighter, more versatile pieces, homeowners can enhance both the visual appeal and functionality of their living spaces, fostering a welcoming and comfortable environment for daily living.”

— Sha Wang (Vancouver, BC)

4. Fake Greenery

“I frequently discourage the inclusion of artificial greenery in home decor. Despite their
convenience in requiring no maintenance, fake plants often betray their artificial nature,
diminishing the overall aesthetic of a room. In lieu of artificial alternatives, designers advocate for the incorporation of real plants whenever feasible. Live plants not only impart natural beauty and texture but also enhance air quality and infuse vitality into the home. Moreover, nurturing live plants can be a gratifying endeavor that fosters mindfulness in daily routines.”

— Sha Wang (Vancouver, BC)

5. Overly Matchy-Matchy Decor

“Designers often advise against overly matchy-matchy decor, where every piece of furniture, fabric and accessory perfectly coordinates. While coordination is important for a cohesive look, too much matching can make a space feel stale and lacking in personality. Instead, consider mixing different textures, patterns, and styles to add visual interest and depth to your decor. Incorporate pieces with contrasting colors or materials to create a more dynamic and eclectic atmosphere. This approach not only adds character to your space but also allows for greater flexibility in expressing your unique style.”

— Sha Wang (Vancouver, BC)

Matthew McCormick, an interior designer from Vancouver, BC

6. Poor Lighting Choices

“As a designer who focuses on lighting, I have a great appreciation for what light can (and can’t) do in someone’s space. From setting an ambience, mood or purpose for a room, lighting is one of the most critical attributes to making a well-designed home come together. As for what I never want to see in 2024, it would have to be the use of compact fluorescent bulbs or any lighting technology where you create a mish mash of colour temperatures that really take away from the desired colour palette or mood in a space. We may not even realize how this can affect our energy level or overall vibe of the decor.”

“By more consciously selecting your lighting or layering the light in a space, you can make a quick and impactful update in your home. For example, it’s great to primarily using pot lights for function and perhaps select a larger, more impactful decorative statement fixture that is just as beautiful on as it is off. Ensure you install a system that allows for a nice dimming curve, so you bring the levels quite low in the evenings to wash a wall or floor, which is a relaxing way to end your day in a way that mirrors your circadian rhythm like the setting sun.”

— Matthew McCormick (Vancouver, BC)

Inspired by its picturesque location along the Beaver River, the eight-room outpost’s design veers away from the brand’s signature pink aesthetic and instead leans in to its countryside vibe. Owners Sarah Sklash and April Brown teamed up with renowned designer Ashley Montgomery to give guests a unique experience that’s moody and mature, yet still features playful and feminine patterns throughout.

5. The Dorchester Hotel — Collingwood, Ontario

If you’re a history buff, a visit to The Dorchester Hotel in Collingwood’s downtown core is a must. The landmark heritage building was originally built in 1895 and was one of the town’s first-ever hotels. That all changed when its new owners, Chris and Tammy Millsap, purchased the building and restored it to its former glory. The couple have worked tirelessly to reimagine 172 Hurontario Street and it has paid off.

Today, the historic property embraces the aesthetic of the 1920s and is a glamourous throwback to the Art Deco era. Thoughtfully-curated guestrooms feature rich-coloured paint, black-and-white checkered floors, clawfoot tubs, moody drapes and brass accents throughout. Still, while the Dorchester transports guests back to the 1920s, there’s an endless amount of modern amenities that bring the hotel back into the 21st century. Think: high-quality linens, bespoke toiletries and plush mattresses you’ll have trouble parting with.

And if that weren’t enough, The Dorchester has just opened an on-site ’20s-themed bar and restaurant, meaning guests don’t need to step foot off the historic property to find their entertainment. That’s a win-win in our books!

Princess Diana’s brother, Earl Charles Spencer, has listed the family’s magnificent childhood home on the upscale rental site Elysian Estates. The Spencer family’s ancestral home dates back to 1688 and features 38 bedrooms, 33 bathrooms and sleeps up to 72 people. The property boasts parking for 50 cars and features a helipad, chapel, billiards room and unique collection of fine art. The estate sits on 550 acres in Northamptonshire, England, which is less than 1.5 hours from London by train.

The massive estate is also the perfect spot for a special event, as it can host up to 1,000 guests. The listing goes on to state: “Althorp has been an important part of England’s history, with many influential political meetings, courtly balls, and even a secret marriage taking place within the walls.”

“Sir John stipulated in his will that the house must be used as a place of entertainment, and now more than ever Althorp offers an unforgettable setting for hosting exceptional occasions, with discreet service, exquisite cuisine, spectacular surroundings and a wonderful sense of history all combined with 21st century luxury.”

This isn’t the first time that late Diana’s childhood home has been made available to the public. In 2013, her brother (pictured above) faced a slew of criticism for listing the property for £25,000 per night to tourists via a travel firm.
