Life is busy. No matter who you are there will just never be enough hours in the day. Despite that being the case, it doesn’t seem to stop Scott McGillivray from trying anyways. Between filming a television series, renovation rental properties and raising a beautiful family, Scott never seems to stop. Recently, we got the chance to sit down and ask, what’s new with Scott McGillivray?

Read on to find out what Scott’s been up to and catch him alongside Debra in Scott’s Vacation House Rules on Home Network. Stream Live or On-Demand with STACKTV. Try it free today!

An Evolving Industry

With so many years of experience in the renovation world, Scott has seen pretty much everything. We wanted to know what changes to that industry have surprised him the most.

“In general, I would say the fundamentals have remained fairly consistent. I think technology has been the fastest mover. Homes are getting a lot smarter. The way that we wire them, plumb them, set up cameras, we really need to plan ahead (especially with investment properties) so that people can access their properties remotely.” We’ve certainly enjoyed seeing these new technologies incorporated into all of Scott’s stunning vacation house builds.

Work/Life Balance

“I wouldn’t say that I am the person to consult when it comes to balancing work and life. I can tell you how mine is. Planning ahead is the way that I get through it, I have a calendar that is booked pretty much six months out. You need to make sure that as a family, everybody knows the assignment and everybody is on board. It’s a lot of preplanning and making sure that you protect personal time. Don’t put yourself last, you’ve got to put yourself first.”

Scott’s Workout Routine

We wanted to know how Scott stays fit and active, whether he has a routine or really is getting it all done on demo days. “There was a period in my life, just before I had kids, where I would workout in the morning. That’s never coming back. Now, I work out in the evenings. I’ll try to workout right before dinner, I don’t know if that’s a good or bad thing. For me, working out is an energy and stress release. I like to feel strong and with the job I have, you have to maintain a certain level or you won’t be able to complete the work.”

Down Time

We asked what his days off look like lately. “I wouldn’t say that I have days off or that I have work hours. If I need to send an email at midnight, I’ll send it at midnight. Recently I took my family to Disney. We went for four days. It was amazing, we did all the things, planned it all out, there was a couple times where the kids waited in line and I sent a couple emails, but I was fully invested while I was there, and we had a fantastic time. It’s a balance for sure.”

Upcoming Travel Plans

“I am going fishing for a weekend. That’ll be coming up at the end of February. I have a ski trip. Actually, I have a work trip, and I’ve tacked on two days to go skiing. I love skiing and fishing, so I’ve got those coming up. Then I’ve got a trip to New York with the family. I don’t do a week or two weeks; some people go away for two weeks, that would give me so much anxiety that I would probably explode. I can do a long weekend, that to me is a full vacation.”

Bringing Work Home

With the huge number of projects and renovations he takes on, we wanted to know if there were any builds that made him think ‘wow, I need to do that in my home.’

“Well, doing vacation house rules and helping people with vacation properties, that turned into me buying my own vacation property. I was like ‘I can’t do this anymore, I need my own.’ So, I think doing that show was a lot of inspiration.”

What’s Worth Saving For?

So much of what Scott does is educating and empowering others financially. Since he’s an expert on helping others make money, we wanted to know what he thinks is worth spending money on.

“I don’t like spending money; I like investing money. Buying a boat, not a great investment but great return on lifestyle. You never have a bad day on a boat. I’ll tell you one thing, as soon as you go on a boat you forget how much you spent on it.” Scott’s right, all big purchases should have a return on investment. Sometimes that return is joy and memories. We think that’s the best investment anyone can make.

Designer Dad

Scott has two growing girls and if one thing is true about children as they get older, it’s that they develop their own tastes. We asked if the girls had started to design their own spaces or if he was still the design expert at home. “My girls are now eleven and twelve years old and their bedrooms are the ones we built for them eight years ago, so they were little kids. We’re now getting to the tipping point where they have some ideas. Now, the good news is they still know that I am gatekeeper of executing idea. They go online and put their vision boards together and keep a little list of things they like. They have their ideas and plans but they’re still good about coming to me and saying how are we gonna get this done?”

Good Eats

As passionate as we all are about design, we’re equally as invested in good food. We wanted to know, If Scott had to choose his dream meal these days, what would it be?

“I’m probably going to have to do a nice tomahawk steak with, I know this sounds terrible, brussels sprouts. Gimme some brussels sprouts. But, before I eat that, I need a caesar salad. Caesar salad, brussels sprouts, asparagus, tomahawk steak, piece of cheesecake, take me out. Done.” There you have it, a man of taste.

Kristen Coutts of Beer Budget Reno

When it comes to having a true dream home, many of us believe it’s too costly and out of reach. Well, Home Network’s newest host, Kristen Coutts, disagrees. She’s here to prove that not only can you glamorize your home without breaking the bank, but you can do it yourself.

We sat down with the host of Beer Budget Reno to get to know her a little better ahead of the exciting new series. From design inspirations to star signs, we wanted to know, who is Kristen Coutts?

How Did It Feel Becoming a Home Network Host?

“I was in disbelief for a long time. When our director of development told we were getting the show, that it was greenlit, I was like ‘Okay, cool’ and she asked me ‘What’s wrong with you? Why aren’t you more excited?’ But I just don’t count my chickens before they hatch. So, I took my time to celebrate.”

Who Inspired You to Get Into Design?

“I grew up watching Scott McGillivray, love watching Scott’s Vacation House Rules. It was a show I watched all the time. Then, when I saw that display at Younge-Dundas Square a few weeks ago and saw our faces side by side on that big screen, it was a really surreal moment.” Obviously, we had to ask if that meant Kristen had gotten the chance to meet Scott since joining the Home Network. “Yes! I met him here at the Home Network offices a few months ago for the brand launch.”

What Does a Normal Day For Kristen Look Like?

“Well, we’re still filming for Beer Budget Reno right now. Most days I would say typically start around 5:15, kind of get myself ready. Some days I get out before my kids wake up, get a minute to give them a little squeeze each, get their breakfast ready, and then I head to set. We have really fun days; I work with some of the best people. I never understood when people said, ‘do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life.’ Working on this show has been the first time I’ve felt that. Then, it’s come home, cook dinner, and start the bath time routine with the kids.”

What’s Your Zodiac Sign?

“I’m right on the cusp of a Capricorn and Aquarius, but when I read the two horoscopes, I feel like I’m more aligned with an Aquarius.” Since Aquarius is known for being independent, creative and humanitarian, we agree that fits Kristen pretty well. After all, with a show that’s all about teaching others how to both save money and glam your home yourself, it doesn’t get much more Aquarius than that.

Are You More of a Traveler or Homebody?

“Traveler for sure! One of my previous careers was actually with a travel company, I ran all of their communications and global events, I was away more than I was home, so I’m a big traveler. One of the people who are on the show, Jody, who helped me with the design, we’ve known each other for 20 years and she and I actually took a four month trip after we graduated university. So, definitely traveler.”

What’s Your Favourite Movie?

“I have a very unhealthy obsession with the Harry Potter franchise. I know it’s twenty-something years later and I should probably grow out of magic, but it’s not going to happen.” The next logical question had to be which of the eight were her favourite. “One of the first couple. The first or second are my favourite, probably the second one because the later ones get really dark. I like the fantasy of the magic and discovering the magic world.”

How Would You Describe Your Style?

“Budget glam are the first two words that come to mind. It’s all about achieving that glamorous sort of “champagne look” on a budget. If you want an actual style, I’d say transitional. I love traditional wainscotting and grand chandeliers, herringbone and chevron floors, but I also like that super modern touch of some more linear lines. So, transitional is where my design style is, but how I want to achieve that is I want that glamorous look on a budget.”

What Should Audiences Expect From the Show?

“I want them to feel like renos are attainable and that they can do it themselves. So often shows will have these six-figure budgets for renovations and that’s not realistic for a lot of everyday people. Some people don’t have the money to hire someone else to do it, so I want to show people that it’s attainable to do it yourself. I want them to see that it’s not as hard as they might think it would be. Breaking down the steps and showing those little tips and tricks so people walk away from the show feeling empowered to do so.”

Were There Any Standout Moments?

“My favourite part in every episode is working with the homeowners. For me, when I started my social media account, before I had the show, my whole thing was teaching people to do it themselves. That and there’s always an element each episode where I get to teach the homeowner a new skill. In most cases, they’re able to take that new skill and see a project through to its completion. So, I’d say seeing their confidence grow.”

What’s Next For Kristen Coutts?

“Well, we booked a vacation because it’s been a very long time since we’ve been away. My family and I are going to go to Mexico for a week. After that, I think I’m going to dive back into the social media side of things. With a very full filming schedule, developing that content has taken a bit of a backseat. I want to get back to providing these tutorials and there’s a few projects around my own home too.”

Best friends and co-hosts of Making It Home, Kortney Wilson and Kenny Brain have had a busy few years. From a brand-new show to cross-border moves, the two of them have been making some big and exciting changes. In preparation for their new series, Life is Messy, we sat down with them to find out what they’ve been up to since we last saw them on-screen. As it turns out, the answer to that was a lot.

Kortney Wilson’s Wedding

As many people know, Kortney recently got married! “We got married down in Mexico and it was just fantastic. Kenny was actually our flower man. Well, bridesman slash flower man. He did a great job, but we agreed that what happens in Mexico stays in Mexico.” From what we saw it was a magical day and we’re glad that some of it is just for them.

Kortney’s Kids Are Growing Up

With children, one of those inevitable, bittersweet moments is when they go off on their own. Seeing them find their own path can fill you with both pride and terror, but that’s all part of the beauty of parenthood. “I’ve got one kid in Boston, one kid in college, and one still at home. My second is at a big SEC school in the South, the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. Man is it fun. I think I’m having fun, but my husband Ryan is living it up. Every opportunity he has to watch a football game; he’ll stay in the dorms with him. They’re having a ball.” It’s great to hear that as the family grows up that there’s still time for moments like that. Go Longhorns!

Kenny Got a New Dog

Sadly, as life goes on, all the changes can’t be for the better. “I, unfortunately, lost my dog Molly while we were in Kelowna working on a few projects. She was my anchor in this world, so I felt pretty lost for a while. After a little (a lot) of therapy and realizing how incredibly lucky I was to have had her for so long, I felt ready to welcome another dog into my world. I rescued a four-month-old-puppy! He had the same birthdate as Molly, February 9th, and I took that as a sign.”

Seeing Kenny going through his healing process and finding such a lovable new pup has been a joy. “I couldn’t be happier with the the little goober, even if I forgot how much work a giant puppy is.”

Kenny Has Been Traveling

“I went back to Newfoundland to see my family. I also visited Joshua Tree National park and have gone to New York. My partner and I visited Kortney in Nashville. After spending a few days with her and Ryan, we took a road-trip through the Great Smokey Mountains. We even went to ‘Dollywood’, which was as fun and hilarious as it sounds.”

Even with all the travelling he’s been doing, Kenny was still clearly eager for more. “My ultimate trip on the horizons is Socotra. It’s a small island off the coast of Yemin in the Arabian Sea, definitely off the beaten path, but it’s so otherworldly gorgeous.”

Kortney is Moving Back to Ontario

“I’m moving back very shortly, within the next two months for two months. It’ll be nice to see a lot of my buddies and go back to the places I grew up. Go back to Sudbury and Kitchener.” Returning to the place you grew up is always a moment full of emotions. We love that Kortney is doing so under such good circumstances. We’ve missed having her here in the Great White North.

Kenny is Loving Calgary Life

“The food scene has really blown up here. I love Ten Foot Henry. Major Tom has the best views of the city. Tiatro for Italian.” If there’s one thing Calgarians know, it’s great food. Clearly Kenny has been no exception. “Besides eating constantly, it’s been great being back. Being closer to my sister, her husband, and my two nephews hast been the best part of it. We all just went to a Roughnecks Lacrosse game. If you’ve never been to a lacrosse game, I highly recommend it.”

Kortney Went to Africa

The last time we caught up with Kortney, she had been planning on going to Africa. We were excited to hear how the trip had gone. “I’ve been to Africa twice since. Teaming up with an organization called Ordinary Hero, I have sponsored a couple families, one in particular for a long time now. Her name is Willetta. She’s an older woman who raised her kids in extreme poverty. So, I got to visit her and do some work up there and got a lot of people sponsored.” It was impossible to not notice the way Kortney lit up while talking about the people she meets, and the work done in Africa. We’re thrilled to know that she plans on continuing these trips. “It’s actually changed my life.”

Kortney and Kenny Are Coming Back

As great as it was hearing from our two favourite besties about how life has been, we wanted to know when we’d see them again. Luckily Kortney and Kenny told us that they’re about to start filming their new series, Life is Messy. What’s even better is that they’ll be filming right here in Canada.

Clea and Joanna talk two-day home makeovers

Achieving your dream home doesn’t have to be an expensive or time-consuming project. With proper planning and a focus on key areas, you can create a stunning space in just a weekend. We recently sat down with the hosts of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, Clea Sheerer and Joanna Teplin, to learn what two-day home makeovers will make the biggest impact. So, clear your calendars, because we’ve got a few two-day makeovers that will make guests think you’ve gotten your own home reno show.

Watch Extreme Makeover: Home Edition Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Home Network, also available on STACKTV. Try it free today!

First Things First: Cut the Clutter

“Editing is critical, it’s critical to the success of any project,” suggests Clea, referring to the act of decluttering a space. Like any other project, preparation is half the job. By editing the contents of the room beforehand, you’ll not only create a more workable space, but have an area where you can appreciate its full potential. “Spend the time doing the organizing and containment and you’ll have that dream home too.”

An unassuming closet, ready for a two-day home makeover
Craig Adderley

Conquer Closets

“The personality of a home comes down to the area that feels most representative of you. To me, that’s the closet.” Clea Admits. It makes sense, that the designs we put on our body and wear out into the world are a representation of us. For that reason the closet deserves some love. Install an organization system, upgrade the lighting around it, or maybe even add a fun wallpaper behind those clothes. We often think of home design as a showcase for other, but sometimes it’s nice to have a little secret, just for you to enjoy.

Swap Out Old Hardware

“The places where people gather the most, those have the biggest impact on a home.” Says Joanna. “I’d say that’s the kitchen.” Agreed Clea. For most homes, the kitchen is a multi-use space, forcing people to congregate and spend time there. That being said, the idea of a kitchen renovation would have most of us clutching our wallets in fear. So, how do you improve such an important space both quickly and on the cheap?

Hardware! There are few jobs easier and more impactful than changing the hardware on kitchen cabinetry. Once you’ve found the hardware that is going to suit your kitchen, it’s just a matter of unscrewing the old and replacing it with the new.

Take on Trim

When it comes to trim, the sky is the limit, or should we say, the ceiling is the limit. “If you start in a huge space, it’s overwhelming.” Joanna warns. “So, you want to start small, get your feet wet, and then take those skills to the next space.”

Trim is one of those words that covers a huge variety of styles and purposes. Trim could refer to a simple baseboard or it could be an entire room of ornate wainscoting. It could be painted to match the wall, natural tones, or even made an accent colour. The possibilities for trim seem endless, but it always adds to a space. Once you’ve decided the right style and level of trim for your own house, you can take it room by room, even wall by wall.

Add a Feature Wall

Gone are the days where the entire room needed to be one solid colour. Now we have two-tone paints, textured wallpaper, and most importantly, feature walls. A feature wall can be anything from a bold standout colour that contrasts the rest of the room, to an eye-catching slat wall. It can be whatever you choose, just make sure that it’s in a prime location to let it shine.

Everyone can remember the feeling of walking into a grand space and going wide-eyed for a moment. That feeling, that sense of awe, is Ali Budd’s specialty. Now with House of Ali, Ali Budd and her all-female design team, are helping people bring a bit of awe home with them. We sat down with Ali herself to ask about her hit show, design inspirations, and what’s next for the luxe designer.

Watch House of Ali on Home Network, also available on STACKTV. Try it free today!

Ready Set Show

We asked Ali how she was feeling since her new show aired and if there were any nerves that came along with it. “You know, no. I think it’s because we followed pretty much what we were already doing. Of course, sitting for hair and makeup before I go to work isn’t the norm, but it was the same whirlwind of everything we were already doing. Only now with cameras.” Having your own show is fun, but it’s clear Ali’s priorities are design.

First Impressions

It’s difficult to not be charmed by Ali, from the moment she sat down with us there was an air of levity. “I’m just hoping that people are into the show and think it’s fun. I hope they think it’s funny and want to watch more.”

First Inspirations

“My brains kind of always moving, I’ll see some strange colour or texture on the side of a building and think, wouldn’t that be cool.” When asked about her design inspirations, it’s impossible to not notice her light up as she starts to look all around for unique colours and textures. “There’s so much talent in Canada. We have some incredible design minds, and my peers are always a source of inspiration.”

Essential Living

One phrase you’ll see on the Ali Budd Interiors website is that they believe that there is a distinct difference between a house and a home. We wanted to know what were some things that made the difference between the two. “You have to really live in your home. Nowhere is off-limits to my kids, I have two dogs, I think people are surprised because were not precious about anything in my house. I love the chaos.”

Essential Luxe

As important as making a space feel comfortable is, making it feel grand is just as important at her firm. “I feel like the ultimate luxury is getting into bed at night. Your mattress, your sheets, your pillows, all of that is important. So, the designs around that bed are just as important. I’m a big believer in good beds.”

Hands-On Bliss

Speaking more about the projects her and her team had this season, “I love the front and back end of it.” Ali gets more animated and excited as she runs through the process of them all. “I love when we’re brainstorming and imagining. Then, having clients understand and sign off on vision you’re creating. Then there’s the end, where all the blood, sweat and tears pay off, you get to see something that started in your brain.”

Designer Destinations

Fans of Ali will already know that she’s done some incredible builds in incredible locations. We asked her what some of the perks and challenges were of doing some destination designs. “Just getting things from A to B. We’ve been doing this a while, and I never want to say we’ve worked out all the kinks, but we have a team dedicated to organization. I love being able to work in other cities.”

What’s Next?

“I don’t really know; I’m still working away.” There seems to be no slowing down for Ali and her team. “We have some really exciting projects coming up. We just finished a home in Costa Rica that just launched as a rental. I build for other people all the time, but that was the first start to finish build for myself.”

Season One Celebration

The first season of your own show is a huge milestone. We wanted to know how she’d be celebrating this accomplishment. “I’m not one to do a big celebration. I’d rather just watch in my bed with a glass of wine.” It certainly sounds like an ideal way to watch; we’ll be following in her lead.

No Longer a Rookie

Since this was his second season of Gut Job, Sebastian had the benefit of experience on his side this time. We asked him how this one compared to his freshman season. “You know, it feels great. This season we took on a lot of challenges. We did a houseboat, and the building code is completely different on the water. Levels don’t really work when your foundation is moving, but I felt more comfortable taking on those challenges this time around.”

Head in the Game

Coming from the CFL, Sebastian was no stranger to hard work, but like football, renovations can require the right headspace. We asked if there were any rituals that help get him into the right mindset for any part of the build. “Yeah, I drink a lot of coffee.” He laughs before he thinks on it a little more. “I actually will take my shoes and socks off at the end of a build and walk around the brand-new floors and ground myself in the space. I think in season one I did a whole reveal barefoot.”

Downtime

“Free time is something that doesn’t exist in my world. Time is so valuable, and I feel like I’m in my high-octane years, so there’s nothing really free about it. I’m always looking for that next thing.” From the sounds of it, season two was just the beginning. There’ll be a lot more exciting builds to come from the Gut Job team.

A Job Well Done

Seeing how much he’s always on the go, we wanted to know which part of his crazy build schedules he found the most satisfying. “The thing I find the most satisfying lately is whenever we get to restructure a home. When we take walls down, everyone is afraid there’s going to be lurking problems, but secretly there’s a small part of me that gets excited to restructure this home.”

A Point of Pride

We wanted to know what stood out as a particularly proud moment in his builds. “The thing that I’m most proud of right now is Ayanna. Ayanna played a major part this season. It’s really cool to watch your partner grow a business.” As much as we love Sebastian’s designs, we’re just as excited to see Ayanna show off what she can do, too.

Reno Returns

“We actually had clients come back from the first season, which is a testament to our work.” It’s hard not to appreciate the pride in his voice as he recalls the job. “Unfortunately, they were one of those builds where we pulled back the walls and found problems. It was intense, but we performed some building chiropractics and got things back to where they needed to be.”

Styled Out

Anyone who has watched Gut Job will have noticed that Sebastian’s style isn’t just limited to design, he also loves a good fit. “My style has always been rooted in rebellion, rooted in what other people are doing, I always wanted to do the opposite. When I got into TV everybody thought the football guy would come out, probably wearing camouflage, but I showed up in floral print. I don’t want anyone to anticipate what I’m going to do.”

Nahla Update

It wouldn’t be a proper Gut Job update if we didn’t find out how Nahla has been. “She’s been doing great. When I’m tired and fatigued, she’s right there, to say it’s all gonna be okay.”

The Future

So, what’s next for Sebastian and the Gut Job team? “I’m coming into my prime as a builder and my team is incredible. My trades are incredible. Ayana is really heading up these designs in a wonderful way. I feel like we are just getting ready to take on and do some of the best renovations of my life.” We’re certain that’s the case and we can’t wait to watch along.

An Important End

Lastly, we couldn’t let Sebastian go without some hard-hitting journalism. So, we asked him the most serious question we know; if you had to choose your final meal, what would it be? “It’s got to be my mom’s lasagna. A lot of people will remember from season one, my mom sold her house in the city, and she moved out to the country. So, when I’m talking about mom’s lasagna, we’re talking about milk and cheese that she that she milked from her own goats and made her own cheese and grew her own vegetables and grew all the herbs, and the meat is from her butcher across the street. So, everything is coming right off that farm. The flavour is to die for.”

Home renovation shows tend to showcase all kinds of builds for all kinds of people. We’ve seen builds to suit the needs of a diverse background of people. However, a renovation for chickens, that’s a first. So, when a client requests a designer chicken coop, it can be uncharted territory. Never being ones to shy away from a challenge, they tackled this designer chicken coop with the same determination they would any build.

No Cluckin’ Around

When building any kind of utility or agriculture building the priority will always be function. If the building isn’t good at its purpose, then everything else ceases to matter. So, for the Rock Solid Builds team, they needed to make a space that allowed the chickens to stay safe from predators, shelter them from the East Coast weather, and allow the clients easy access to them. Once the team had accomplished all of those things, then they could focus on the aesthetics. Sticking with traditional Newfoundland designs, they painted the exterior in bold and bright colours as if it were one of the many fishing huts from the area.

Refined Roosting

Just because the aesthetics weren’t first on the list of priorities doesn’t mean they weren’t still important. Once the primary build was complete, Randy and the team were determined to make this more than just a functioning space. Like every part of your home, this coop was meant to be enjoyed. So, with some striking wallpaper and some bespoke woodworking, they made sure that this coop would be one to remember. Plus, we hear it’s where all the chicks hang out.

Most deadlines are dictated by logistics, things like supplies and weather. For Graham and Ruth, their deadline was the local blueberry festival. It may sound trivial, but in small towns events such as that are what create bonds in the community. It made sense that they would want to be in their own home during such a special time. That’s where Randy Spracklin and his team came in. The home was a new build but needed to have all the feeling of a true East Coast home, a traditional coastal retreat with all the modern comforts.

Ground Up

It’s not often that the Rock Solid team gets to work on a new build. Normally, they’re trying to overcome age-related issues in a home, so this Brigus home in Harbour Pond was a treat for them. Though the house was easier to work on, it also meant that it was a blank slate. This left a challenge for the designers, who had the task of creating that timeless and traditional East Coast charm in a modern construction.

Controlled Comfort

Once the house was built, it was a matter of making it feel like a home for Graham and Ruth. By adding old school charm throughout, as well as some of their own personal vintage pieces, the house began to feel like it had been there all along. Paired with cool, relaxing palettes, the space seamlessly blended form and function. Now Ruth and Graham are settled into their forever home, just in time for the Brigus Blueberry Festival.

When we think of design and renovations our minds often go straight to residential homes. It’s easy to see why, they’re what we see the most. However, there’s a lot more to restore than just that. Randy Spracklin and his team are back for another season of Rock Solid Builds and it’s anything but typical. From chicken coops in the sky to homes built from a ship’s mast, nothing is too strange or challenging for this crew. That’s why, when a school in St. John’s needed to transform a derelict yard into a one-of-a-kind outdoor classroom, they called Randy and his team.

Rough and Rugged

For most spaces there is a clear divide between the indoor and the outdoor. Normally they have varying and distinct purposes. That wouldn’t be the case for this future outdoor classroom. The space would become a versatile area for children to learn and study in a peaceful environment. Before any of that could take place, the yard was in desperate need of an overhaul. So, the Newfound Builders with the help of a few local volunteers, rolled up their sleeves and got to work.

Outdoor Overhaul

After repairing the area for new sod and landscaping, the space was ready for a muralist to come in to create a massive piece, celebrating inclusivity. From there the team, including the designers, installed various forms of seating as outdoor workstations. The end result was a place where students ages K through 9 could escape and feel safe during their studies. Thanks to the Rock Solid Builds team this build will stand the test of time for countless students to come.

There’s one element of any property that immediately makes a space special. That element is the view. In beautiful Bay Roberts, Newfoundland, there’s no shortage of gorgeous views overlooking the bay. However, having the view is only half the battle, you still need to take full advantage of it. For artist Andy, that meant creating a space where he could comfortably take in those views while working on his paintings. The solution was obvious: a cliffside artist pod. That’s where Randy Spracklin and the Rock Solid team came in. Together, the team rallied to overhaul a bland backyard and create a cliffside artist pod worth of those stunning Newfoundland views.

Keeping It Simple

When designing a space such as this, it’s easy to overdo it. For both Randy and the homeowners, they knew that the design of the space was not the focal point. Instead, they opted for a simple white interior with panoramic windows to showcase the Newfoundland beauty all around them. As a designer, you can’t outdo mother nature, so sometimes it’s best to just let her be the star.

Cliffside Creativity

When taking in the exterior of a project that values the view so much, it’s crucial to remember that that building will be a part of that view. The team had a responsibility to create something that would add to the view as well as hold up to the challenging conditions found on top of a coastal cliffside. For these reasons the team stuck with simplistic designs that they could build strong and insulate well. Now this cliffside artist pod will be a beautiful addition to this stunning view for years to come.
