When I think back on my dreamy destination wedding in Split, Croatia, I know it was the perfect choice for me and my husband. But that doesn’t mean it didn’t come with all sorts of hurdles we had to overcome to make it down the aisle. From language barriers to flight logistics, there were endless details to consider that wouldn’t be part of a typical wedding, and it’s important to have a plan. If you’re considering a destination wedding, below are some questions to ask yourself before you make the commitment.

Will There Be a Language Barrier?

Depending on where the destination is, there’s a good chance you won’t speak the local language. As much as Google Translate can be helpful in a pinch, you want to make sure you know exactly what you’re agreeing to when signing any vendor contracts (especially when they’re for thousands of dollars!). One of the first steps when researching your destination wedding is to find a bilingual wedding planner. They should be fluent in both English and the language spoken at your destination, so that they can help you navigate the fine print.

If you aren’t working with a wedding planner, it may be worthwhile to hire a translator for any important documents. The bottom line: you want to feel confident signing them!

Will It Actually Be Cheaper to Have a Destination Wedding?

There’s a myth that destination weddings are cheaper. Although this can be true, it’s certainly not always the case. Before making any major commitments, set up meetings with a few local wedding planners to let them know your budget and wish list. Ask for a cost breakdown to give you an accurate idea of expenses. Plus, comparing quotes from a few different planners will give you a more well-rounded idea of costs.

What Will the Tipping Culture Be?

Many countries do not have the same tipping culture as North America, and this can be a major consideration when mapping out your wedding budget. In Canada, you’re generally recommended to tip 15 to 20 per cent for your wedding vendors, including caterers, hair and makeup, florists and so on. This means that if you’re planning a $50,000 wedding, you’ll need to set aside at least $7,500 for tips alone! In my case, there was no tipping expectation in Croatia, so I got to set aside that budget for other precious things on my wish list (like a gelato cart for dessert!).

Will You Be Devastated if Someone Can’t Attend Your Destination Wedding?

Destination weddings inherently involve travel, which means that sometimes guests won’t be able to attend particularly if they’re not fit to fly. For my destination wedding, I quickly realized my grandfather wouldn’t be able to make the trip to Croatia and it was tough to make the call. Ultimately, I chose to have a courthouse ceremony in Canada so that he could still watch me get legally married. It ended up being a really fun and special way to spread out the celebrations!

Can Your Guests Afford to Attend a Destination Wedding?

As much as your big day is all about you and your partner, it’s also about ensuring a great experience for your guests. It’s important to be mindful of their budget, and consider how much their flights and accommodations might cost. If this feels like a barrier for you, don’t lose hope! There are many ways you can get creative to make it possible for your guests to attend. In the case of my wedding, I knew flights would be on the more expensive side, so we told guests that wedding gifts weren’t necessary. You could also look into discounted flight and accommodation prices for group bookings, or evaluate your budget to see if you can cover the costs for any essential guests.

Can You Afford a Multi-Day Affair?

Although not necessarily required, destination weddings often entail more than just the main wedding ceremony and reception. Because guests have travelled far to attend, it’s customary to throw a welcome dinner or cocktail party, and sometimes post-wedding day events. You want your guests to feel like the trip was worthwhile; adding touches like this can make the wedding feel more like a travel experience than a singular event. When breaking down your wedding budget, think about what you could realistically spend on additional events, and what could give guests the best possible experience without breaking the bank.

Ultimately, remember that no matter where you get married, a lot of planning and coordination will be involved regardless. While you shouldn’t let that deter you from the destination of your dreams, being realistic about your budget and expectations is essential. Ask yourself these questions and do your research in order to making sure the day is as successful for you as it is for your guests.  Happy wedding planning!

Woman saving money

It’s a new year, and while you may not necessarily buy into the whole “new you” concept that many people like to talk about every January, now is a great time to take stock of your finances. Whether you’re saving for a new home, funding a reno, or planning a move, the best time to start saving is now.

Sometimes, that’s easier said than done. But there are steps you can take to give yourself a fresh financial start in 2025 while getting on track to save for the living arrangements of your dreams.

Take Stock of Your Current Finances

January is an excellent time to go back and see how the past 12 months went. Maybe you spent too much over the holidays. Perhaps you started a new job or side hustle and weren’t sure what kind of money you could count on yet. Whatever your situation, you can learn a lot about your financial habits by seeing what you spend.

One good measurement is to see the current balance of your bank accounts and tally up any outstanding debts. Doing so lets you see exactly how much you owe while adding up how much money you’ve squared away for emergencies.

It’s also a good idea to see how much you were able to save this year, how much you earned overall, and how much you may have invested.

Create an Honest Budget

January bullet journal

Creating an honest budget is easier when you have a clear picture of your current finances. If you’ve done budgets in the past but had difficulty sticking to them, perhaps you weren’t being honest enough with yourself.

If you’re the type of person who buys coffee every morning and lunch three times a week, don’t expect to change overnight. Ensure you include money for spending, take-out, gifts and emergencies in your bi-weekly or monthly budget, along with your bills and savings. A good rule of thumb is to save about 10 per cent of your salary after taxes, but that isn’t always feasible. Plan to save what works for you and treat that line in your budget like a bill.

Write Down Your Goals

Now that you know what kind of budget you’re working with, write down your goals. They can be big-picture, like saving $20,000 for a down payment, or smaller, such as purchasing new appliances. Perhaps you want to paint your home and need a few hundred extra dollars. Or maybe it’s time to upgrade that crib to a bed.

Whatever your goals, estimate how much they will cost and when you want to achieve them. If you have several goals, list them from most important to least important, and decide what percentage of your savings you can put toward each item. The more detailed you can be, the better.

Meet With a Financial Expert

You’ll see some growth if you throw your savings into a regular bank account. But you may experience more growth by looking at investment accounts via a financial planner. They can help you get into investments, mutual funds, savings bonds and more, helping you grow your money more than a regular old savings account can.

Meeting with a mortgage broker is also a good idea if you plan to buy a home. They can help you put on paper exactly how much you can afford and what you need to save to get the best possible mortgage rate. Plus, many of them will lock in a rate with you that’s guaranteed not to go up over the length of your agreement.

Even if you have a financial planner or mortgage broker, the beginning of the year is a great time to check in and ensure your accounts are doing what they should. After all, life changes, and sometimes, we need to switch things up.

Be Patient

Saving $100 a paycheque for a home renovation or a down payment can feel like nothing. But even without interest, that’s an extra $2,600 a year that you’ve managed to put toward your goal. If you have a partner who can do the same, that’s $5,200 a year. In five years, you’ll have a $26,000 down payment. That number could be even higher depending on what interest you’re making.

The point is to be patient and trust the process. That goes for savings, budgets and goal-setting. We live in a world where we’re used to getting things we want instantly, but sometimes, good things really do come to those who wait. Your finances might not be perfect, but with time, determination and planning, 2025 can be the year you finally get on track.

Entering the housing market is among the top goals for Canadians. In fact, the Financial Post reports that 58 per cent of Gen Z and millennials plan to buy a house in the next five years. But, with rising living costs, that dream may feel lofty for some. Here’s what you should know about Canadian mortgages in 2025 before you consider applying.

What Is the Minimum Credit Score to Qualify for a Mortgage?

While there are other factors that may contribute to getting your mortgage approved, your minimum credit score to be approved for a traditional mortgage should be between 620 to 680, according to Loans Canada. Other sources, like Scotiabank suggest that it should be on the higher end of that range, with a minimum score of 680 being their recommendation to get approved. Equifax, on the other hand, considers 660 and above a “good” credit score.

What Is the Range of Credit Scores in Canada?

According to the Government of Canada, a credit score is “a three-digit number that comes from the information in your credit report. It shows how well you manage credit and how risky it would be for a lender to lend you money.” In Canada, credit scores range from 300 to 900.

  • 550 and lower: Bad
  • 560 to 659: Fair
  • 660 to 724: Good
  • 725 to 759: Very good
  • 760+: Excellent

Can You Get Approved for a Mortgage With a Low Credit Score?

It’s possible that you may still be considered for a mortgage if you don’t meet those requirements. Some other factors that might impact your mortgage application are:

  • Your debt
  • Your income
  • The mortgage amount and amortization period
  • Your employment history

For example, if you have a great income, low debt but a bad credit score, it’s possible that you could still be approved. If you’re having trouble getting approved for a mortgage because of your credit score, consider improving your credit score by reviewing your credit history, applying for a credit card and building your credit history. You can also choose to hold off on applying for a mortgage until your credit is improved, and you’ll likely have more desirable options.

When that’s not possible, there are still other options like having a co-signer for your mortgage, increasing the size of your down payment or considering alternative lenders, such as private lenders.

What Is a Mortgage Stress Test?

In addition to your credit score, you will also need to pass a mortgage stress test. A mortgage stress test is designed by federal bank regulators to ensure that Canadians don’t take on too much debt — so they won’t default on their mortgage payments. To pass the mortgage stress test, applicants must prove that they can afford the mortgage rate, plus two per cent. So, if the current mortgage rate is 5 per cent, you would need to qualify for a mortgage at 7 per cent in order to pass the stress test.

With this information, we’re hoping that you’re armed to apply and qualify for your mortgage in 2025. Ready to buy? Check out the best and worst cities for homebuyers in Canada.

Solo travel is officially out for 2025! According to recent data from Flight Centre Travel Group, instead, Canadians are now looking to connect with others during their travels. The travel agency has noted that bookings for solo trips have decreased by six per cent over the past year, while bookings for family and couples’ trips have increased by six per cent and 10 per cent. This craving for connection aligns with a recent YouGov survey, which reported that 48 per cent of Canadians value deeper personal connections while travelling abroad.

The shift in Canadian’s travel behavior isn’t too surprising, as solo travel and independent trips were popular in 2024 and it’s only natural for humans to seek connection. It seems that Canadians, during a time of high inflation and uncertainty in the world, are favouring what truly matters in life — their relationships with loved ones.

If sharing experiences with loved ones is on your bucket list for 2025, we’ve uncovered the top destinations that offer entertainment and flexibility for all ages. Whether you’re travelling with kids, grandparents, a friend or a romantic partner, these are the five best places to connect in 2025:

The Ludlow Hotel in New York City
Ludlow Hotel

New York City

When it comes to travel that aligns with connection, New York City is an obvious choice, given how populated the city is and the number of attractions it offers. Whether you’re visiting Central Park, the Statue of Liberty, a renowned museum or catching a show on Broadway, there’s no shortage of things to see and do in NYC. Plus, NYC has some of the best accommodations in the world. For those wanting to check out a trendy part of the city, we suggest staying at The Ludlow Hotel in the Lower East Side. The decor is cozy, the staff are incredibly friendly and best of all, you can walk to countless bars, music venues and restaurants. There’s even a restaurant on-site, Dirty French, offering bistro-style dishes like chicken and crepes and tuna tartare (be sure to ask for the bread basket – it’s one of the best in the city!)

The lobby at the Ace Hotel Brooklyn
Ace Hotel Brooklyn

If NYC is a little too busy for your liking, we suggest staying just outside the city in Brooklyn. There, you’ll find another great place to stay – The Ace Hotel Brooklyn. Opened in 2021, the design-forward hotel boasts a breathtaking lobby featuring loads of natural light, inspiring artwork and unique vintage furniture. There’s also a number of food and beverage options on-site, allowing guests to fully take in the art and people-watch at the same time. Rooms at the Ace Brooklyn are thoughtfully-designed with the hotel’s signature aesthetic in mind – think: lots of exposed concrete, oversized windows, plywood furniture and deep green accents.

Vietnam

For those looking for a more affordable option in 2025, Vietnam is a great culturally-rich choice. It’s also a good option for those who want to experience connection abroad but are planning to travel solo, as countless group tours are available here. Tour operators like G Adventures and Intrepid Travel are two companies that make it easy to meet others while abroad, offering everything from wellness tours to local living tours. They even have tours designed exclusively for those travelling alone who crave connection – dubbed ‘Solo-ish Adventures,’ the itineraries on these tours are packed with experiences that turn strangers into a close-knit community. For younger travellers (hello, Gen Z!), there’s also Topdeck Travel, a company that specializes in vibrant, social tours for solo adventurers. They offer 330 different tours in 65 countries so the options are truly plentiful.

France

While Paris may be synonymous with romance, it’s also an ideal choice for friends looking to explore a new city together. Endless fine dining options, charming cobblestone streets, one-of-a-kind shops and a lively night scene make it the perfect destination for friends travelling together. For those looking for something a little quieter, Club Med Opio en Provence is a great place to experience the French countryside. Situated along the French Riviera, this upscale all-inclusive resort offers guests exclusive amenities like golfing, a luxurious spa, an oversized outdoor pool and various cooking classes. There’s even a circus school for those seeking a little more adventure during their stay.

New Zealand

If distance isn’t an obstacle, New Zealand is a great choice for travel in 2025. Known for its stunning landscapes, New Zealand caters to adventurous solo travellers looking to join group hiking tours and guided road trips. It’s the perfect destination for making new connections while exploring breathtaking fjords and rugged terrain.

Plus, New Zealand hits another travel trend that we’ve predicted to be big in 2025 – JOMO travel. JOMO is all about the “joy of missing out,” meaning travellers are aiming to escape the fast pace of everyday life by doing less on vacation. So, whether that means staying in a secluded cabin in the New Zealand wilderness or a country estate in the French countryside, travellers will be able to rest and recharge by following this trend.

Florida

Florida is a great option for those travelling with younger children and teenagers alike. In terms of popular attractions, there’s Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, the latter of which is set to open their latest buzz-worthy experience in 2025, Epic Universe. Thanks to such attractions that skew towards a younger demographic, Florida boasts countless hotels and resorts geared towards multi-generational families and larger groups in general. Two such hotels that are currently trending online are the Legoland Florida Resort in Cypress Gardens and the guitar-shaped Hard Rock Hotel in Hollywood. Both are incredibly unique and fun in their own right and worth checking out if you happen to be in the area.

For those travelling with friends or a significant other, Miami is always a good option, too. In addition to design-worthy hotels, there’s lots to do – think beautiful beaches, art deco museums, luxurious spas, fine dining and a variety of festivals happening at any given time.

In real estate, there’s a saying that the best time to buy a house is now. That’s because no one can ever precisely predict the market. Even when interest rates drop or the market changes, it creates a slew of other factors that can prevent you from snagging your dream property.

Still, there are some considerations if you aren’t in a hurry and you’re wondering what time of year might be best to buy a house. We turned to some Canadian realtors to get their hot takes on when you should start house hunting.

The Busiest Time of Year

Spring is traditionally the busiest time of year for real estate in Canada, with more homes to choose from and eager buyers hitting the market. However, that isn’t necessarily the best time to purchase a home.

“There’s greater competition and upward pressure on prices,” says Angelo Ferlisi, a broker of record for Nest Seekers International.

“Spring is generally when families looking at upsizing or downsizing enter the market and have set a deadline to purchase so that they can get settled for the next school year,” says luxury real estate expert Nick J. Kyte of Coldwell Banker Real Estate.

The bottom line? You may have more options in the spring, but you’ll also face stiffer competition and the potential for higher prices.

The Best Time for Buyers

Conversely, the colder months in Canada tend to be slower for sellers, with fewer homes on the market. That puts sellers in a situation where they may be more eager to sell.

“The winter months, particularly December through February, often present unique opportunities for buyers,” says Ferlisi. “During this period, we typically see reduced competition and more motivated sellers due to seasonal factors like harsh weather and holiday commitments.”

He adds that buyers in markets like Toronto and Vancouver often pause house-hunting activity for the holidays, but their searches pick up in January and February. It’s also not uncommon for prices to dip slightly during that timeframe.

On the other hand, Kyte believes the last six months of the year are an ideal time for buyers and says the average sale price falls between two and five per cent between the spring and the end of the year.

“The dead of summer and fall may be your best bet to snag that property for a better deal,” he says. “Long weekends are also a good time to make an offer, as most buyers want to enjoy the few holidays they have. Therefore, there’s less chance for competition.”

Certified luxury home marketing specialist and broker Jim Dolphin agrees. “With fewer buyers out there, competition is low, which means you have more leverage. Sellers are often more open to offers and flexible on terms, giving you the chance to get a better deal and close quickly.”

The Bottom Line

It may seem ideal to save a few thousand dollars on your home purchase by waiting for a specific time of year, but at the end of the day, the market is more than seasonal trends.

“Each market has its own dynamics,” says Ferlisi. “For instance, Toronto and Vancouver can see early-year opportunities, while Montreal’s unique rental cycle influences demand during the summer turnover period. Buyers need to focus on financial readiness, understanding the nuances of their local market, and acting when the right property aligns with their personal circumstances.”

This brings us back to that original real estate saying: the best time to buy is now.

“With housing affordability not becoming any better in the near future, now is the time,” says Dolphin. “If you don’t need to sell a house first, you’re in a great spot right now. Buyers need to know that this window won’t stay open forever — once more buyers jump back in, the market will heat up again. If you’re ready to make a move, this is your moment!”

Over a lifetime, we’ll spend close to 230,000 hours sleeping — so, about one third of our lives is spent lying on a mattress. If you hadn’t clocked the importance of knowing when you should replace your mattress before, now may be the perfect time.

Over time — and way sooner than our accumulated lifetime of 9,496 days of sleep — dust mites, mould and mildew build up, and mattress materials lose their integrity and begin to sag. Besides the health implications of sleeping on a “mature” mattress, throughout our lives our sleep needs will change, our living situations shift, and our bedroom budgets rise and fall.

It’s clear we need some guidance on when we actually need to swap out our sleeping surface — and if there’s anything we can do prolong its limited life. Laura Di Lorenzo is the founder and CEO of Sunshine Mattress Co., with more than a decade’s experience in the organic mattress industry, mastering everything from customized mattress design to premium material sourcing. Di Lorenzo is dialled in to the details needed to determine how often you should replace your mattress.

1. What Are the Telltale Signs?

“A few key signs make it pretty obvious when it’s time for a new mattress,” says Di Lorenzo. “If you’re waking up with allergy [or allergy-like] symptoms or feeling persistent back pain, it’s a good indication that your mattress isn’t doing its job anymore!”

Another giveaway that it’s time to replace your mattress is sound. If your mattress squeaks and groans with every micro movement, that could mean the materials are breaking down. Weight is also a factor to keep tabs on; if the mattress is heavier than when you first bought it, that could be from moisture build up. And when a mattress gets damp, dust mites, mould and mildew aren’t too far behind.

2. What Happens if You Ignore Said Signs?

Di Lorenzo confirms that, over time, mattresses loose their ability to provide proper support, with memory foam and spring mattresses being especially prone to this. “If you wait too long to replace your mattress, you might notice a few issues… it can cause your body to feel misaligned or uncomfortable during sleep.” Persistent back pain, sore hips and joints, or general unexplainable fatigue (from unconsciously tossing and turning throughout the night) can also arise.

3. What Contributes to a Mattress’s Wear and Tear?

“If you toss and turn a lot in your sleep, that constant movement can wear down the materials quicker,” says Di Lorenzo. “Using the mattress for things like watching TV or reading instead of just sleeping, [also] puts additional strain on it.”

She also points out that a person’s weight can be a factor, as well as improper frame support, such as using an old box spring or an ill-fitting foundation.

4. How Can We Lengthen the Life of a Mattress?

By rotating and flipping a mattresses regularly, you’ll avoid sleeping in the same spot and wearing down a small, specific area. A solid support system, such a slat base (rather than flexible slats or a box spring), makes sure pressure is evenly distributed throughout the mattress. A mattress protector is always a must, shielding the mattress’s material from spills, stains and dust.

“Lastly, controlling the humidity in your room helps,” says Di Lorenzo. “Open the window in the morning and pull back your sheets to let your mattress breathe and dry out any moisture.”

5. Which Mattress Materials Hold Up the Best?

“Latex is hands down the most durable material out there,” says Di Lorenzo. “Organic latex mattresses can last 20 years or more if treated well, which makes them an excellent long-term investment.”

She believes that when combined with moisture-wicking wool, you get the ultimate mattress-material match. “The wool helps control moisture, which is key for maintaining a fresh and dry mattress… these two materials together give you the most long-lasting, comfortable sleep.”

6. What Are the General Time Guidelines for Replacing a Mattress?

“It used to be that you’d replace your mattress every 10 years, but with the rise of mattress-in-a-box options, people are replacing their mattresses much sooner these days,” says Di Lorenzo. Memory foam softens and thins over time and spring mattresses lose their spring. So, depending on how well you take care of them, a conventional mattress will maintain its form and function anywhere from one to eight years.

7. What Should We Look for in a New Mattress?

Before even looking at available mattress options, Di Lorenzo suggests getting a clear picture of your own sleeping patterns. How do you usually sleep: back, side or front? What are your pain concerns, such as sore hips or back? Do you like the feeling of sinking down or would you prefer a firmer surface?

“Testing in person is ideal so you can feel the mattress for yourself, but if that’s not an option, I’d suggest scheduling a video consultation with the brand you’re considering.” And if you’re worried about having to dig deep for a new bed frame to accompany the new mattress, you can rest easy. A new frame is only necessary if you’re changing mattress size or if your current support system is letting you (and your mattress) down.

There’s nothing quite like the familiar and festive “POP!” of a holiday cracker to bring cheer around the Christmas or Hanukkah dinner table. Make these joyful decorations in a snap with seven simple steps and completely customize them with personal messages and tasty treats to delight your loved ones.DIY Holiday Crackers - Materials required

Materials Required:

  • Wrapping paper
  • Scissors

  • Ribbon or string
  • Cracker snaps

Step One: Cut Wrapping Paper

Step 1: Cut Wrapping Paper

Cut out a few pieces of bright wrapping paper approximately 14 inches wide and 8 inches long. Look for wrapping paper that features grid lines along the back for easy measuring and cutting.

Step Two: Wrap Paper Rolls

Step 2: Wrap Paper Rolls

Line three cardboard paper rolls side by side and carefully wrap them by rolling along the paper. Secure the paper with a piece of regular tape, double-sided tape, or a bead of hot glue.

Step Three: Insert Cracker Snap

Step 3: Insert Cracker Snap

Slide a bon bon snap or cracker snap through the paper rolls from one end to the other. Secure one end with a small piece of tape. This will keep the snap in place when you fill the cracker and close the ends.

Step Four: Gently Crush Ends

Step 4: Gently Crush Ends

Grab hold of the wrapped cracker with both hands and find the break beneath the surface where the paper rolls meet. Gently twist the rolls apart to form a groove in the paper.

Step Five: Close One End

Step 5: Close One End

Make sure the cracker snap is easily accessible on either end of your cracker. Carefully tie a ribbon or string to close one end of the cracker. Work the ribbon along the groove of paper to gently seal it shut. Once the ribbon is in place, trim the paper ends and lightly fluff them into shape.

Step Six: Fill Cracker

Step 6: Fill Cracker

Now the fun part! Fill your cracker with items like personalized jokes or meaningful messages, paper crowns, balloons, candy, small trinkets or toys, and – of course – confetti!

Step Seven: Close Other End

Step 7: Close Other End

Repeat step five to close the other end of the cracker. Leave the ends tied simply with a ribbon or string, or dress them up with some jingle bells, small ornaments or colourful pom poms.

Winter officially arrives on Dec. 21, but the cold air and bursts of snow already have us thinking about the season ahead. If you want to stay warm, comfy and safe in your home this winter, here are some essential tasks to complete now, like the adulting specialist you are.

Check Your Heating System

Now is a good time to check your furnace to ensure it works properly. Set your thermostat a couple of degrees above room temperature and ensure the heat is kicking in. Change the filter, make sure the vents are free and clear, and if necessary, consider a professional inspection just to be on the safe side.

Seal Windows and Doors

No one wants a draft coming through their home when the temperature drops. Check the seals around doors and windows to ensure everything is nice and tight. If there are leaks, you can use an insulator kit to seal them or add caulk to crevices where heat may escape.

Set Your Ceiling Fans

Ceiling fans do more than cool you down in the summer; they also help to circulate heat in the winter. To do that, make sure you set your fans’ blades clockwise. Doing so creates an updraft and puts less pressure on your furnace as you heat the house.

Test All Alarms

It’s a good idea to test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors regularly, but with winter coming up, add this task to your list. Put in fresh batteries, make sure the sounds are loud enough, and go over escape plans with the family so that everyone is on the same page.

Clean Out Your Vents

Clean out air ducts every three to five years to reduce allergens, improve the overall air quality of your home, and prevent fire hazards. Doing so can also help with potential pest or rodent problems, conserve energy, and keep your home smelling fresh. If you’re unsure how clean your vents are, pull back a cover and look inside. If there’s dirt and debris, it may be time to call in a professional.

Clear Gutters of Debris

As snow melts, water can easily pool in your gutters and cause damage. Before the next solid freeze happens, remove leaves and other debris from your gutters to keep water free and flowing over the next several months.

Check Attic Insulation

If your attic doesn’t have proper insulation or airflow, it can lead to a slew of problems, like mold, higher bills and more energy consumption. To check yours, see if you can spot the floor joists. If you can, you’ll probably need more insulation. If your attic is drafty, moist or contains ice dams, those are additional signs to call in some pros.

Drain Your Hoses

It may seem like a small task, but draining hoses before the weather freezes over is an important winter home maintenance task. If trapped water freezes, it can expand, leading your hose to burst. Worse, hoses still connected to faucets can burst and potentially damage faucets and pipes.

Check Your Sump Pump

If your home has a sump pump, check the pit for any debris or dirt that may have accumulated over the past year. It’s also important to check the discharge hose for any blockages. Ensure the pit is topped up with water, that the discharge hose is aimed away from your foundation, and consider adding a battery backup in case the power goes out. Never put antifreeze in your sump pump, but if you’re concerned about freezing, get a professional to install insulation around the line and intake sections.

Sweep Your Chimney

If you have a chimney, you should clean it yearly. (And more often if you use your fireplace regularly.) Otherwise, soot and creosote can accumulate and cause health risks and fire hazards. It’s also a good idea to install a chimney cap to prevent dirt and animals from entering over the winter, and ensure you’ve got a stainless steel liner.
