Everyone can remember the feeling of walking into a grand space and going wide-eyed for a moment. That feeling, that sense of awe, is Ali Budd’s specialty. Now with House of Ali, Ali Budd and her all-female design team, are helping people bring a bit of awe home with them. We sat down with Ali herself to ask about her hit show, design inspirations, and what’s next for the luxe designer.

Ready Set Show

We asked Ali how she was feeling since her new show aired and if there were any nerves that came along with it. “You know, no. I think it’s because we followed pretty much what we were already doing. Of course, sitting for hair and makeup before I go to work isn’t the norm, but it was the same whirlwind of everything we were already doing. Only now with cameras.” Having your own show is fun, but it’s clear Ali’s priorities are design.

First Impressions

It’s difficult to not be charmed by Ali, from the moment she sat down with us there was an air of levity. “I’m just hoping that people are into the show and think it’s fun. I hope they think it’s funny and want to watch more.”

First Inspirations

“My brains kind of always moving, I’ll see some strange colour or texture on the side of a building and think, wouldn’t that be cool.” When asked about her design inspirations, it’s impossible to not notice her light up as she starts to look all around for unique colours and textures. “There’s so much talent in Canada. We have some incredible design minds, and my peers are always a source of inspiration.”

Essential Living

One phrase you’ll see on the Ali Budd Interiors website is that they believe that there is a distinct difference between a house and a home. We wanted to know what were some things that made the difference between the two. “You have to really live in your home. Nowhere is off-limits to my kids, I have two dogs, I think people are surprised because were not precious about anything in my house. I love the chaos.”

Essential Luxe

As important as making a space feel comfortable is, making it feel grand is just as important at her firm. “I feel like the ultimate luxury is getting into bed at night. Your mattress, your sheets, your pillows, all of that is important. So, the designs around that bed are just as important. I’m a big believer in good beds.”

Hands-On Bliss

Speaking more about the projects her and her team had this season, “I love the front and back end of it.” Ali gets more animated and excited as she runs through the process of them all. “I love when we’re brainstorming and imagining. Then, having clients understand and sign off on vision you’re creating. Then there’s the end, where all the blood, sweat and tears pay off, you get to see something that started in your brain.”

Designer Destinations

Fans of Ali will already know that she’s done some incredible builds in incredible locations. We asked her what some of the perks and challenges were of doing some destination designs. “Just getting things from A to B. We’ve been doing this a while, and I never want to say we’ve worked out all the kinks, but we have a team dedicated to organization. I love being able to work in other cities.”

What’s Next?

“I don’t really know; I’m still working away.” There seems to be no slowing down for Ali and her team. “We have some really exciting projects coming up. We just finished a home in Costa Rica that just launched as a rental. I build for other people all the time, but that was the first start to finish build for myself.”

Season One Celebration

The first season of your own show is a huge milestone. We wanted to know how she’d be celebrating this accomplishment. “I’m not one to do a big celebration. I’d rather just watch in my bed with a glass of wine.” It certainly sounds like an ideal way to watch; we’ll be following in her lead.

Fresh, beautiful, luxe… these are all words Ali Budd uses to describe her home design series House of Ali. In the series, Ali Budd and her all-female team tackle renovations and high-end builds from demanding clients. The results are nothing short of spectacular, whether she’s bringing a century-old farmhouse into this era or adding luxury vibes to a vacation home.

Read on to learn more about Home Network’s newest personality, Ali Budd. Watch new episodes of House of Ali on Home Network and STACKTV.

She Started Her Business in Her Basement

Ali didn’t plan on becoming a powerhouse designer. She majored in English at Western University and contemplated going to law school. Then, on her father’s advice, she went to the International Academy of Design instead. Post-graduation, she worked for an architecture and then a design firm before launching her business out of her basement in 2010.

She Doesn’t Follow Trends

Ali doesn’t believe in trends. Instead, she believes in doing what you love. Rather than looking for designs that might have a short shelf life, she guides clients into concepts, themes, and inspirations that can last a long time. When it comes to shopping, she also advises clients to devise a plan, like a Pinterest board of inspiration.

She Has Projects Around the Globe

Ali is Canadian, but she has projects all around the world. She works often in the United States and recently expanded into Costa Rica and Antigua. In the future, she plans to take her business even farther across the globe.

She Fights For Causes

When she’s not designing and jet-setting, Ali raises support for causes she believes in. One such cause is Shelter Movers, a Canadian organization that helps domestic abuse survivors find safety across the country.

She’s Excited to Show Authentic Working Women

One thing Ali wants to showcase in her series is her all-female team. She isn’t a fan of the shallow and catty way some reality and lifestyle women are portrayed, and she says her team of women is far from that.

She’s a Working Mom

Ali has three children, but she decided not to feature them on the show. That doesn’t mean viewers won’t get a glimpse of her personal life, though. The designer’s husband, Martin Ware, appears, along with her mother, aunt, and uncle.

She’s Unapologetically Herself

Ali really wants viewers to get a full picture of her design life, whether she’s at home without makeup or getting ready for a red carpet premiere. She feels that’s the only way people will connect with her and her team, which only takes on real-life clients for the show — there’s no casting here!

She Gets Her Entrepreneurial Spirit From Her Parents

When Ali was growing up, her parents leaned into their artistic sides by running an ad agency. She recalls her father travelling around the world to photograph and stage various spaces. Inspired, Ali reorganized rooms at home and brought design ideas into the house from a young age.

Her Work is Widely Recognized

Ali has made a name for herself as a coveted interior designer. In addition to being in demand, she has been featured in major publications, such as VogueELLEHouse & HomeDomino, and Architectural Digest.

She’s the Newest Home Network Talent

If House of Ali sounds familiar, that’s because it was first announced in 2022, and was filmed in Canada a while ago. The first season also streamed in the United States. Now, Canadian viewers can check out the show on Home Network and STACKTV.

Ali Budd in a finished 8-year-build

There’s a lot of reasons people get attached to something they’ve created. Sometimes it’s pride in the finished project, the amount of time invested in it, or that it feels like a representation of the artist. At the Ravine House it was a combination of all three for Ali Budd. Her and her team had been tirelessly working on this 8-year-build and now it was coming to fruition. After being given free reign on the design of this renovation, Ali was determined to create an unforgettable home no matter what it took. Now, you get to decide if this 8-year-build lives up. Spoiler: it does.

Youthful Design

When making a luxe home, the level of design needs to continue through all the rooms while still suiting the room’s purpose. However, since this was a family with three young boys, she needed to create designs that would appeal to them. This was easier said than done, as she didn’t want something that they would soon grow and mature out of. So, to do this and have a sense of cohesion between the three rooms, she used repeating themes. Funky patterned wallpaper allowed each boy to showcase their personality while giving them an easy way to change their aesthetics in the future.

Mature Opulence

Common spaces in the home were far less personalized. Instead, they were meant to wow and create a sense of luxury while still being functional. Nowhere was this better showcased than the kitchen. Crisp white high-end materials throughout created the perfect backdrop for stunning feature materials. This contrast allowed the brass rangehood and stunning backsplash to be center stage. The Ravine House is finally finished, after an 8-year-build, and ready to wow.
