No Longer a Rookie

Since this was his second season of Gut Job, Sebastian had the benefit of experience on his side this time. We asked him how this one compared to his freshman season. “You know, it feels great. This season we took on a lot of challenges. We did a houseboat, and the building code is completely different on the water. Levels don’t really work when your foundation is moving, but I felt more comfortable taking on those challenges this time around.”

Head in the Game

Coming from the CFL, Sebastian was no stranger to hard work, but like football, renovations can require the right headspace. We asked if there were any rituals that help get him into the right mindset for any part of the build. “Yeah, I drink a lot of coffee.” He laughs before he thinks on it a little more. “I actually will take my shoes and socks off at the end of a build and walk around the brand-new floors and ground myself in the space. I think in season one I did a whole reveal barefoot.”

Downtime

“Free time is something that doesn’t exist in my world. Time is so valuable, and I feel like I’m in my high-octane years, so there’s nothing really free about it. I’m always looking for that next thing.” From the sounds of it, season two was just the beginning. There’ll be a lot more exciting builds to come from the Gut Job team.

A Job Well Done

Seeing how much he’s always on the go, we wanted to know which part of his crazy build schedules he found the most satisfying. “The thing I find the most satisfying lately is whenever we get to restructure a home. When we take walls down, everyone is afraid there’s going to be lurking problems, but secretly there’s a small part of me that gets excited to restructure this home.”

A Point of Pride

We wanted to know what stood out as a particularly proud moment in his builds. “The thing that I’m most proud of right now is Ayanna. Ayanna played a major part this season. It’s really cool to watch your partner grow a business.” As much as we love Sebastian’s designs, we’re just as excited to see Ayanna show off what she can do, too.

Reno Returns

“We actually had clients come back from the first season, which is a testament to our work.” It’s hard not to appreciate the pride in his voice as he recalls the job. “Unfortunately, they were one of those builds where we pulled back the walls and found problems. It was intense, but we performed some building chiropractics and got things back to where they needed to be.”

Styled Out

Anyone who has watched Gut Job will have noticed that Sebastian’s style isn’t just limited to design, he also loves a good fit. “My style has always been rooted in rebellion, rooted in what other people are doing, I always wanted to do the opposite. When I got into TV everybody thought the football guy would come out, probably wearing camouflage, but I showed up in floral print. I don’t want anyone to anticipate what I’m going to do.”

Nahla Update

It wouldn’t be a proper Gut Job update if we didn’t find out how Nahla has been. “She’s been doing great. When I’m tired and fatigued, she’s right there, to say it’s all gonna be okay.”

The Future

So, what’s next for Sebastian and the Gut Job team? “I’m coming into my prime as a builder and my team is incredible. My trades are incredible. Ayana is really heading up these designs in a wonderful way. I feel like we are just getting ready to take on and do some of the best renovations of my life.” We’re certain that’s the case and we can’t wait to watch along.

An Important End

Lastly, we couldn’t let Sebastian go without some hard-hitting journalism. So, we asked him the most serious question we know; if you had to choose your final meal, what would it be? “It’s got to be my mom’s lasagna. A lot of people will remember from season one, my mom sold her house in the city, and she moved out to the country. So, when I’m talking about mom’s lasagna, we’re talking about milk and cheese that she that she milked from her own goats and made her own cheese and grew her own vegetables and grew all the herbs, and the meat is from her butcher across the street. So, everything is coming right off that farm. The flavour is to die for.”

Sebastian Clovis on Gut Job

From his days as a former CFL player to starting his own television production company, Sebastian Clovis has always been about blazing trails and overcoming obstacles to get the job done. We got to follow along as he worked alongside his talented team to transform homes and change lives on Home Network’s Save My Reno. In his latest series Gut Job, we witnessed as he tackled some of his most extreme renovations to date.

We recently sat down with Sebastian to catch up on all things work and life since we last saw him on screen. Read on to find out what the home reno expert has been up to and what he’s most excited about for 2024.

Do You Have Any New Passion Projects That Most People May Not Know About?

I started a production company and that’s been a very interesting project to take on. Applying my business skills that I’ve learned from being involved with TV, from the contracting side of things and, of course, in partnership with Ayanna, who has a very extensive business acumen.

We’ve taken all of our combined knowledge and created a production company so that we can really do a fantastic job of creating interesting TV shows and great story arcs that are visually appealing and geared towards giving the viewers a deep look into what it’s like on a renovation site.

Along with that, because we started this production company, we’ve now nailed down our production process. I’m looking at the world and saying, okay, I have a production company now. What else could I possibly film? What other shows and what other genres can we tap into? I definitely feel that with the building of that production company, my life is all of a sudden injected with a whole lot of new potential.

What is Your Favourite Hobby Right Now?

What I’ve been most excited about lately is just getting back into baking bread. Baking bread is something that my father taught me how to do. And believe it or not, I met [a friend] at university, who had an idea one night to start a bread baking company called the Punch Bowl.

We found a whole bunch of clients, you know, students and different people around campus that really enjoyed fresh baked bread, and on the weekends we delivered it on our bikes. It was just it was really fun. And I’ve been excited in the last little bit to get back in the kitchen and get my buns and loaves on.

How’s Nahla? Has She Learned Any New Tricks?

Nahla is doing fantastic. It’s so interesting watching her grow up. She’s just fiercely independent. She does what she wants to, very much like a cat. She doesn’t want too much attention. Oh, but she wants attention at a 7 a.m. when it’s her feeding time, she’ll tap me on the foot letting me know.

I did teach her a new trick recently, she learned how to roll over. She’s been able to stand up on two legs and turn around on command, but the roll over is a new one. When we go out to a coffee shop, I can almost put on a show for people around.

What is Your Proudest Accomplishment From 2023?

My proudest accomplishment by far was handing in season two of Gut Job. I’ve worked for many production companies in my time, but actually being trusted with my production company and be given the green light to make the show myself on time and on budget might be one of my greatest life accomplishments. That was definitely something that I never thought I would do in my lifetime.

What is the Greatest Lesson You Learned in 2023?

The thing that’s popping into my mind is how absolutely instrumental communication is when you’re dealing with so many different people. Being able to be very clear on what is expected, what’s going to happen, and then how it’s going to happen, who’s responsible, who’s accountable, who’s contributing and who needs to be informed about the decisions that are being made. It’s absolutely critical.

Another one, is that I’ve realized how important reprieve is. You have to take moments where you shut the everyday noise down so that you can clear your mind and clear your thoughts. This allows for your brain to just download all of the information and synthesize it in the back of your mind without thinking about it. That’s where you start to come up with the brilliant ideas that that pop up out of nowhere.

Do You Have Any Travel Plans for 2024?

I’m trying to get a trip together to go out to Portugal and Spain. Those are two places that I’ve really wanted to go to for quite some time. I’m very interested in different ways of life and getting to see how they build out there, what the houses look like.

I was born in the UK. I’ve spent a lot of time in Toronto and around Canada, building and making the most of all of my opportunities here. I’m looking forward to spreading my wings and really seeing how how big the globe is.

What Design Trends Are You Most Excited to Try in 2024?

One of my favorite colors is a really deep red and maroon color. And it’s a color that’s actually harder than you think to work into a traditional design or a traditional house. That particular palette is really becoming popular now, along with dark timber tones, which is something that I’ve been trying to work into my projects.

If You had to Pick a Theme Song to Describe Your Life Right now, What Would it Be?

A Hard Day’s Night by The Beatles.

Speaking of The Beatles, What Did You Think of Their New Song ‘Now and Then’?

Oh, I loved it. I love the fact that technology allowed them to clean up those old vocals from John Lennon and come out with that last song in our era.

Sebastian Clovis of Gut Job

You may already know Sebastian Clovis from his jaw-dropping overhauls on Gut Job, but there’s a lot more to him than just rehabilitating homes. Carpenter, designer, mentor, and self-described artist, he’s a man of many hats.

From his multigenerational ties in building to his adorable pup (and goats), here are 10 things you may not know about Sebastian.

1. Meet Nahla, His Precious Pup — And a Force to be Reckoned With

“She’s a daredevil, and she’s definitely kind of spicy.”

Even though he can handle running all sorts of challenging remodels, there’s no handling Sebastian’s five-year-old Shiba Inu, Nahla.

“She’s really kind of fiercely independent, but not just that, she definitely has nine lives. She’s burned through like seven of them.”

2. He Has a Very Green Thumb

Sebastian, although plenty capable of knocking things down, would much rather create. There are few better showcases of this than his own garden, where he grows an assortment of fruits and vegetables. All natural, of course!

3. Though Canada is Home, He Loves to Travel

Like most people after the last few years, Sebastian is eager to start traveling again. When you can’t travel to the places that truly resonate with you, they start to pull you towards them, and he’s been feeling the same.

“Costa Rica is my dream destination, but I also have a strong calling to go back over to Saint Lucia and see my grandfather.”

4. Construction and Renovation are More Than Just a Job to Him, They’re an Artform

It’s easy to overlook all of the hard work that goes into creating a beautiful living space, but it takes skill and passion to make it right and make it last. It’s for these reasons that Sebastian considers himself, first and foremost, an artist. It’s a talent and an artform he feels is in his blood.

“I remember looking in my grandfather’s eyes and looking around the house in Saint Lucia and realizing he built the entire house himself over forty years ago. He built the foundation, poured the concrete. I looked at him one day from across the dinner table, and I just realized, like, I’m you.”

5. Professor Clovis is Teaching the Next Generation

Despite all the years he’s put into becoming the skilled tradesperson and artist he is today, he’s more than glad to pass on all that knowledge to the next generation of up-and-coming tradespeople. He wants to pass on the same advice that has been given to him.

“Don’t get bogged down by the minutia. Be a value to every circle that you go into, any place that you go to. Do your best to add value and you’ll add value.”

Passing on wisdom for him is more than just how to do a job, but how to be the best version of yourself as you do it.

6. Building Roots is Just as Important as Building Great Homes

As much as he values the finished product that comes from working with his own two hands, Sebastian values the connections and bonds that he makes during these jobs. Meeting new and incredible individuals as clients, strengthening friendships by working side-by-side, or finding commonality with family through shared passion, each renovation is an opportunity to connect.

“My favorite part of filming Gut Job is just being able to bring in so many people from my life. I’ve just been able to really open up my contacts list and call people.”

7. This isn’t His First Rodeo

If he looks familiar, it’s because he’s no rookie. Sebastian first joined Home Network in 2014 and has been on several different shows over the past eight years. You’ve likely seen him and his work on hit shows like Save My Reno (along with now Gut Job co-star, Samantha Pynn) and Home to Win.

8. Meet his Partner and Designer Extraordinaire, Ayanna

As skilled as Sebastian is, he can’t do it alone, so he gets help through the incredible team around him. Meet his partner and talented interior designer, Ayanna Augustine. You can catch Ayanna helping Sebastian make the most of his overhauls on Gut Job.

9. He Played Football in the CFL

Sebastian has played as a free safety for the B.C. Lions, the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, and the Saskatchewan Roughriders, and played for the Lions during their 2006 championship season.

10. He Keeps Goats and They’re Beyond Cute

What more is there to say? If you follow Sebastian on Instagram, you’ve no doubt been lucky enough to not only see Nahla regularly, but to watch his goofy little goats in all their mischievous glory.
